Students who do not use spoken or sign language to communicate often find themselves in the “respondent” role of conversation. This kind of exchange may involve a student answering a game of 20 questions, taking part in a conversation that dead ends after 1-2 turns, or responding to a topic they have no experience or interest in talking about. This session will introduce participants to Dr. Caroline Musselwhite’s technique of topic-setting using Augmentative and Alternative forms of communication (AAC). Participants will consider how a person in the role of the Deafblind Intervener facilitates access to topical, accessible and meaningful conversations with students and their partners.
